SALEM — Farmers National Bank Calcutta and Columbiana branches wrapped up their Dog Days of Summer campaign with a donation of supplies and a check for $175 to the Columbiana County Humane Society.

Employees of the bank donated cleaning products, food, and other supplies for the cats at the humane society along with money for the facility to purchase needed items.

Multiple branches of Farmers National Bank participated in the campaign, with the Lisbon and Damascus branches donating to the Columbiana County Dog Pound and The East Liverpool branch to Alley Cats to help with spaying and neutering. Each branch chose the charity or agency they wanted to partner with for donations.

This is a part of the bank’s Caring for Community program, Angel Fickes, communications coordinator, Farmers National Bank, said. She noted they did the same program a few years ago, but this year they did an animal spotlight showing some of the animals available for adoption to help them find homes.

Columbiana County Humane Society Board President Sarah Underwood said since the organization is a 501 c3 non-profit they run completely on donations, so the donations they received from the bank mean that is supplies they don’t have to buy, and they can’t express how grateful they are when a business like Farmers National Bank runs a campaign like this for the agency.

“We can’t express it. It’s just great gratitude,” Underwood said.

“It keeps us going another day and we are able to take in more animals because of what the community does for us.”

She noted that the agency has become very frugal with their shopping, and they look for things on sale and they clip coupons so the $175 can buy a lot of cat litter or kitten food. She said $175 is a lot for the agency. They can also buy vouchers for spay and neuter when they go on sale for $10 so that can help with spay and neuter.

The Columbiana County Humane Society will be holding an open house on Sept. 13 where people will be able to see what has been done with the renovations on the building paid for from the interest off the agency’s trust. Underwood noted the agency has been holding open houses for adoption every Saturday and that has helped.

They need to raise $30,000 now to do an isolation unit.

Once that goal is accomplished, Underwood said, they may be able to start taking dogs again. Currently they only have cats/kittens.
