HVAC issues force Dollar General in Salineville to close … for now

SALINEVILLE — This excessive summer heat has made it tough for employees and customers of the village’s Dollar General store at 33 W. Main St.

Due to issues with the store’s HVAC system, store management repeatedly has had to close the store.

This is just the latest Northeast Ohio Dollar General to be suffering maintenance issues.

A store in Beloit also had to temporarily close in December due to a lack of heat during the winter months.

This apparently is somewhat a common issue with HVAC systems at Dollar General stores, as the list of stores having past problems with this also includes the Maple Avenue store in Fairborn and a store in Conway, S.C.

There are no specific federal regulations on work place temperatures, but the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends a thermostat setting between 68 and 78 degrees with humidity control between 20 and 60 percent.

When these conditions are not met, Dollar General has been known to close the stores for repairs.

There was no answer at the store when called at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to confirm the store’s open status nor a note acknowledging any closure on Facebook.

A store employee posted the store is closed until further notice pending the necessary repairs.

In a statement received Tuesday morning from Dollar General corporate’s media relations spokesperson, the company acknowledges specific parts are needed for the HVAC repairs at the Salineville store, which they currently await.

“We installed temporary cooling units, amid other measures, to help ensure a comfortable working environment for our employees and pleasant shopping experience for our customers,” the statement read, adding DG is actively monitoring the store.
