BOE approves multiple contracts in special meeting

The Wellsville Board of Education met in a special session on Tuesday to vote on resignations and multiple contracts.

Board members approved the resignations of Band Director Matt Ohlin and Sheryll Hertzler with Ohlin’s resignation to be effective July 25 and Hertzler’s effective Aug. 22.

Superintendent David Cappuzzello said that Ohlin is leaving because he has a chance to get his master’s degree paid for at YSU and finish up an internship with them while working out with the YSU Marching Band. He also said that Ohlin thought it was a really good opportunity after weighing his options.

Cappuzzello also noted that once the position for band director was posted, the district received five applications within 36 hours. There are now 13 applicants.

“We are really happy about that and want Matt (Ohlin) to do well and we thank him for his time,” Cappuzzello said.

Hertzler is going back to the trucking industry. The district has Allie Sanchez who will be finishing training and hopefully be able to step right in which will put us back at four drivers without missing a beat, Cappuzzello said.

An addendum to the contracts for Garfield and Daw Elementary School principals increasing the number of days worked from 204 to 212 and giving the two principals a 2% pay increase was approved.

Cappuzzello noted that he did a survey of all Columbiana County schools. He discovered that Wellsville, while not at the top in pay scale, is no longer the lowest, but right in the middle.

“We didn’t do extraordinary for them, but we put them a little bit better where they should have been,” Cappuzzello said.

A three-year contract was approved for Athletic Director Kyle Exline to continue as athletic director and serve as assistant high school principal and bus coordinator.

A two-year contract was approved for Allison Scott as the high school principal.

A three-year contract was approved for Malissa King as the school psychologist and special education director.

Cappuzzello noted that King was capable of taking on both positions and giving her an increase to do both positions would save the district $80,000 annually.

A two-year contract was approved for Jaimon Edison to serve as high school girls basketball and elementary coach.

Board members also approved a contract in the amount of $58,183 with Diloreto Construction Inc., for the board offices project which involves converting the former Jehovah Witness Hall now owned by the school into an office for the Board of Education.
