LISBON -- The Beaver Local School District band earned an opportunity to compose music for a film.

Band Director Matt Newman said the band was able to finance enough money to spend two days at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. While there, the band marched in a parade one day and then participated in a film experience at the Jimmy Fallon studios.

He said the band pre-learned a score from "The Lorax" to put to film.

The trip took place Feb. 12-17 and the band was able to stay at the new Dockside Hotel and Resort connected to Universal Studios Orlando.

In addition to the film experience the band also spent two days at Disney World visiting Epcot Center and Magic Kingdom.

The band travels every other year and once to Florida every four years.

Newman gave an overview of the trip to the board of education during this month's regular meeting.

He said the students really appreciated the learning opportunity.

In other matters during the board meeting, Elementary School Principal Brianne Hall shared that the new Book Nook machine kickoff was held on March 7.

She said the machine valued at nearly $13,000 was purchased using only Scholastic Dollars from Book Fairs.

"We have also purchased a few set of refills for the machine, also using free Scholastic Dollars. We hope to be able to sustain the refills by earned dollars alone," she said.

The Book Nook machine is part of the school's PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) Initiative, she added.

Middle School Principal Jake Walgate also said that the school was well represented at the Columbiana County Art Show and Spelling Bee, with Maureen Bone earning county champion at the Spelling Bee.

Bone will proceed to the National Bee in Washington D.C.

Walgate added that as a result of Bone's win the district will be hosting the 2026 Columbiana County Spelling Bee.

"Thank you to Mr. Newman for his dedication to the school bee and support of the participants of the county bee," Walgate said.

Student Zoey Krulik won Best in Show for the middle school in the county art show.

As for the high school, Principal Aaron Walker told the board that the high school choir received an excellent rating in Class B at the large group choir contest as Howland Middle School.

"This is the first time the choir has competed at large group contest and it was a strong showing for them. We had 130 students compete -- which is about 25 percent of the high school student body," he said.

He offered thanks to choir director Allison Hamilton and the students for their work.

He was also pleased to announce that students Cameron Anderson, Luke Rettos, and Zach Redman were selected as 2025 Buckeye Boys State delegates to represent Beaver Local High School the week of June 8 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

The American Legion Buckeye Boys State is an eight-day hands-on experience in the operation of the democratic form of government, the organization of political parties, and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio's government.

Furthermore, Walker said that five female students will be representing Beaver Local High School for the 2025 Buckeye Girls State. They will attend Bowling Green University the week of June 8th for an intensive week of study.

"Through hands-on experience these young women have the opportunity to not only learn the mechanics of local and state government; but also learn citizenship and patriotism; gain self-confidence, poise and character," he said.

Those students are Lillie Wyse, Kacey Dickey, Isabella Gralezki, Cadance McCune, and Sophia Smith.

Walker thanked the Glenmoor American Legion Post 736, the Glenmoor American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 736 and the Wellsville American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 70 for their hard work to make it possible.
