Landon Wheatley will be representing Beaver Local High School at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY) in June at John Carroll University. Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. Their leadership programs are designed to educate, motivate and activate students, giving them the tools they need to turn their ideas into action and reach their goals. Each program adheres to the five core HOBY values: Volunteerism, Integrity, Excellence, Diversity, and Community Partnership.
Southern Local to celebrate Vets
Southern Local Schools will recognize those who gave of themselves for American freedom during the annual Veteran’s Day Program. Veterans are invited to arrive early on Nov. 11 for a hospitality hour with coffee and a light breakfast served in the high school cafeteria at 8:30 a.m. The program will follow in the gym at 9:30 a.m. and students will assemble with community members to hear patriotic music, special readings and presentations by students in grades K-12. Southern Local High School Band Director Emily Forbes-Bowling is planning the festivities and said it will honor those heroes who have defended our country. “Southern Local will once again be hosting our annual Veteran’s Day program,” she said. “The program will feature students from all grade levels and it is free and open to the public. It is a longstanding tradition.” She noted that about 200 guests attend and about 75 people are past service members.
