After one of the wettest and coolest of springs, we are all looking forward to the warm sunshine of summer. Sometimes summer means more outdoor activities with the onset of more daylight in the evenings. Your community center is prepared for all seasons.
The auditorium where the Everyday Church each Sunday holds its services is fully air-conditioned and includes a new sound system provided by the church. Also, most of the rental rooms at the center are air-conditioned, including the Farmers Room suitable for around 80 people, the Banquet Hall where the Prayer Breakfast was held in May that can seat about 250 people, the wide-screen, surround sound Movie Room, the Bistro and the Game Room.
The Art Party Room that is suitable for parties for around 100 people will have new air-conditioning installed shortly. That is where Margaret Myers, high school art instructor, will hold her Student Art classes on Saturdays June 1, 8, 15 and 22. Pre-school students through sixth grade may sign up for the classes at the community center daily from noon to 5 p.m. or may call 330-385-2110. This year there will be a charge of $5 per session to cover the cost of the materials. The project will be to build a Fairy Garden that students will make and take home at the end of the session.
Later in the summer, Amy Dunlap and Katie Muldoon plan to offer a repeat of their highly successful music therapy classes in the John Fitzjohn Room at the center. This program is designed to appeal to pre-school children and will be held on a weekday. They are considering an additional session each week to reach more children.
The Saturday Matinee Movies is under the direction of Teresa James. One movie is shown each week from 2 to 4 p.m. Schedules of the classic movies to be shown each Saturday in the wide-screen, surround sound Center Theatre are available in the center, on the website and appear in the Community Calendar section of the newspaper daily.
Chairman Linda Henderson is anxiously awaiting the first appearance of Monarch Butterflies in the garden that was planted last year with the assistance of East Liverpool High School students in its shop class. Most of the plants placed in the garden last spring have survived the winter and are healthy. Dill plants were added this year and these should attract also the beautiful Swallow Tail butterflies. They can all be easily viewed from inside the center or may be seen closer-up from the walkway around the garden.
If you are looking for an interesting place to take visitors this summers, you are always welcome at the center seven days a week from noon to 5 p.m. or by making an appointment at other times arranged through the center. Displays of chinaware produced in the community in days gone by, Hans Hacker unique paintings of the area along with his personal easel and many other items of interest, are also on display at the center.
Chairman Mike Parkes has completed the schedule for the Legacy & Legends Lectures Series for its ninth year. A schedule of six lectures for the coming year is available at the center. Invitations to subscribers from prior years will be in the mail shortly. To be a member it costs $100, which entitles a member and guest to attend all six lectures between September and next June. Proceeds help underwrite the cost of operating the community center.
