SCOUTS HONOR VETERANS

1 min read

Cub Scout Pack 43 – East Liverpool and Scouts Troop 2012 Friday placed American flags at the grave sites of all veterans at Riverview Cemetery as part of the annual Memorial Day observance. The Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Chapel was a gift to Riverview from the Grand Army of the Republic, mostly Civil War veterans. At the time the cemetery's opening was announced, they started a fund with a donation of $ 2,500 and the Ladies Auxiliary raised $500. By 1897 they had enough money to build a chapel and contracted with the Flora Brothers of Steubenville, Ohio to build it for $ 11,753. Construction was completed in 1899 in time for a Memorial Day dedication. More than 10% of the town's population turned out for the ceremonies. The G.A.R. chose this inscription to be engraved on the chapel, "To commemorate the loyal service of her volunteer soldiers who so faithfully and efficiently aided in suppressing the rebellion 1861 – 1865." The Scouts continued their efforts Saturday at Spring Grove Cemetery. (Submitted photo)
