ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP – A 10-year-old boy who wondered off on his own and was reported by his parents as having gone missing around 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon was found safe later that evening.
Crews from the Calcutta Fire Search & Rescue Division who were toned about at about 5:43 p.m., deployed K-9 Solace on her first assignment since completing training to track the missing juvenile and the fire department had four crews searching the woods along with St. Clair Township police officers.
Officer Kelsey Hedrick said he was advised by dispatch when he came on duty at 6 p.m. about the missing child and that other units were out on Grimms Bridge Road searching for him.
Hedrick made his way out to the area where firefighters and other officers were and spoke to the missing boy's father who said he did not know where the boy might have gone. After searching the area where the rescue teams and K-9 were not searching for about 30 minutes when he located the boy about a mile in the opposite direction at the train trestle area across the bridge of the creek.
Hedrick said the boy, who was shirtless, shoeless and wet, was shaking from cold. He radioed dispatch and told them he had located the child and was on the other side of the creek. He met the ambulance from CVFD on his way back and had them check the juvenile out. The mother arrived and was given an escort back home where the juvenile was safely returned unharmed.
