ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP -- The St. Clair Township trustees approved Police Chief Brian McKenzie's request to change the department's schedule from eight-hour shifts to 12-hour shift during Monday's meeting.
McKenzie initially made the request at a previous meeting telling the trustees the Fraternal Order of Police union had approved the change and he needed trustee approval to go through with it.
The trustees tabled the matter at that meeting for further discussion.
McKenzie was unable to attend Monday's meeting, but Trustee Robert Swickard noted that McKenzie had done a lot of research on the matter including talking to other departments who are on 12-hour shifts before making the request. Swickard also said that according to the chief, the change in shift hours would allow the officers an extra day off during the week.
The trustees approved the change for a six-month probationary period which will begin April 28 and end Oct. 26.
Road Supervisor Scott Barrett in his report told the trustees that the road department had completed the ditching and berming in preparation for chip and seal and are now waiting for the hot patch to begin.
Barrett also noted that the road department is trying to maintain the grass along Columbia Drive. The township does not have the proper equipment to maintain it and keep it looking nice. When asked what was needed, Barrett said a zero-turn mower. The trustees told him to get an estimate of what one would cost.
Barrett said the water from the recent storms and flooding at Grimms Bridge was going down and the road department would be taking down signs there on Tuesday.
James Campbell submitted his resignation to the road department for retirement purposes. His last day will be May 31. This leaves the department seeking someone to fill his position and they are taking applications through April 12.
A resolution was adopted during the meeting for the renewal of the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation for a fee of $2,585.
Also approved was a quote for Cowan Masonry to repurpose the garage floor at the government building at a cost of $5,433.75 and a quote for Technique Roofing Systems to replace the roof at the township garage at a cost of $66,423. The estimate also includes a new gutter system. The township will need a $50 down payment and the remainder when the work is complete.
Purchase orders of $174,856.09, blanket certificates of $109,984.82 and bills of $228,017.44 were all approved for payment.
The St. Clair Township Travel and Tourism Bureau's Spring Clean Up will be held April 27 from 9 a.m. until noon and will include roadside and neighborhood cleanup. Those wishing to participate can pick up garbage bags, a shirt and gloves at the community center behind the police department on that day before 8:45 a.m.
The St. Clair Township Board of Trustees meets every other Monday at 4 p.m. in the community room at the administration building. The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 22.
