With Lenten season, comes fish fries

EAST LIVERPOOL --Area fish fries for the Lenten holiday remain one of the largest fundraisers for area non-profit and social organizations during the spring, and this year they prepare to resume in mid-February.

For the New Manchester Volunteer Fire Department, its weekly fish fries are their largest fundraisers, according to Buddy Stewart.

Held between 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 16-March 29, diners may select their fish or chicken in the form of a sandwich for $6 or upgrade it to a dinner with coleslaw and either french fries or mac-n-cheese bits for an extra charge.

Shrimp also is available either in the form of a basket or the upgraded dinner.

The additional dinner sides also can be purchased individually.

New this year, apple, cherry, blueberry, peach, lemon and chocolate fry pies also will be available for purchase at $3 each courtesy of Miriam's Amish-Style Cooking and Baking

Cash only is accepted; however, there is an ATM available on site if needed for diners.

The department also offers local delivery with minimum order exceeding $30 subject to staff availability. To order, call (304) 564-4497.

A little farther up north, the Lions Club handles fry cook duties in Newell. Club members prefer to keep to the basics on their menu. You either can choose a fish sandwich for $7 or add fries and coleslaw to upscale to a dinner for an additional charge.

They serve between 10 a.m. -5:30 p.m. with dine-in and carryouts available at their 510 Washington St.. Delivery is also available. Newell Lions Club also hosts fish fries outside of the Lenten timetable, also offering its menu on the first and third Fridays from October through May. Orders can be placed at 304-387-3413.

The Chester American Legion is serving either fish or shrimp (diner's choice) through Good Friday. Diners can choose either a fish sandwich or shrimp basket or add two sides to upgrade it to a dinner. Side options include soups like lobster bisque or clam chowder; fries; hush puppies and cole slaw. Dine-in or carryout will be available at the post's 404 Carolina Ave. home. The Wellsville Sons of Italy host weekly fish fries during the Lenten season each year. In addition to either fish (baked or fried), a combo dinner with shrimp is also offered. Dine-in or carryouts will be available.

Between 4-7 p.m. on Fridays, fish dinners with two sides are available for $12 each at Second Baptist Church, 1091 Pennsylvania Ave. in East Liverpool. Diners can choose from french fries, macaroni and cheese or green beans for $12. Orders can be placed by calling 614-571-6272. Dine-in and carryouts will be available.

For one day only, the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual fish fry from 3-7 p.m. Good Friday (March 29) to benefit St. Clair Township's annual Memorial Day activities in May. The event also includes a bake sale and Chinese auction.

Diners may purchase pre-event dinner tickets for $10 from department firefighters or area businesses including Sabatini Shoes, Four Seasons Mini-Mart or Calcutta Auto Parts.

Dine in will be available at the fire station located at 15445 Pugh Road, Carryouts will be available.
