Westgate Middle School sends three students to county spelling bee

EAST LIVERPOOL — After six rounds, 19 fifth- and sixth-grade students dwindled down to the to the top three spellers during Westgate Middle School’s spelling bee Tuesday morning.

Sixth-grade student Mariah Gillum was determined the overall grand champion for the school when she was the last one standing and correctly spelled “quip.”

Fifth-grade students Levi Rudibaugh and Matthew Elseman were the second- and third-place winners.

All three students will represent Westgate Middle School at the Columbiana County Spelling Bee to be held at Beaver Local High on March 2 at 9:30 a.m.

Each student who participated received a certificate, a ribbon and a bracelet. The three winners also received a medal, a certificate and a spelling bee pin to wear when they go to the county bee.

East Liverpool Junior High School held its spelling bee Feb.1.

Of the top five spellers, four of them were seventh-grade students.

Seventh-grade student Margaret Carter won the bee by correctly spelling “repose.” A spell-off was held to determine the district alternate and second- and third-place winners.

Eighth-grade student Rowan Stokes placed second, seventh-grade student Thomas Ellison placed third and seventh-grade student Ameila Armstrong is the alternate.
