Residents and pets escaped unharmed from an early morning residential fire that sent one firefighter to the hospital on Friday.
The East Liverpool Fire Department received the call out for a structure fire at 221 W. Eighth St. at approximately 8:50 a.m. The department was joined at the scene by North Star Critical Care and Liverpool Township Volunteer Fire Department.
East Liverpool Assistant Fire Chief Eric Croxall said when they arrived on the scene firefighters observed heavy smoke coming from all the windows with no fire showing at the time from the outside.
The residents and pets, who are now being put up in an apartment by the homeowner's brother, were already outside the home when firefighters arrived
Firefighters had the fire under control at about 12:30 p.m. and were able to clear the scene shortly after.
Croxall said the house is a total loss. He said he won't know the monetary damage estimate until he checks the house value on the Columbiana County Auditor's website.
The fire's cause is unknown and pending investigation. Croxall said they still need to talk to residents to get information. The fire does not appear suspicious, and Croxall said he anticipates the fire department conducting the investigation in-house with no need to call in the state fire investigator.
It is unknown until Croxall talks to the residents if the home had working smoke detectors.
"It is still under investigation," Croxall said. "We still have to talk to the residents and go from there."
The department is unable to release any details on the injured fire fighter at this time.
