A former Weirton resident was recently sentenced to 13 years to life for attempting to kill his former spouse.
Charles William Sims Jr., 53, pled guilty Tuesday to felony offenses of attempted murder in the first degree and kidnapping for incidents at his home in Weirton in which he held his former spouse against her will and attempted to kill her.
Sims was sentenced to three to 15 years for the attempted murder charge and life, with parole eligibility after 10 years for the kidnapping. He will serve the sentences consecutively for a total of 13 years to life in the West Virginia Division of Corrections.
Steven E. Dragisich, prosecuting attorney of Hancock County, and Herman D. Lantz, assistant prosecuting attorney for Hancock County, represented the state. Attorney Kevin L. Neiswonger represented Sims. The Honorable Jason A. Cuomo presided over the case.
The criminal charges against Sims resulted from the diligent and thorough police work completed by the Weirton Police Department. Officer Garrett Ammann was instrumental in protecting the victim from further harm.
