WHEELING - Northern Panhandle counties saw a healthy number of candidates turn out Monday on what was the first day of the 2024 election filing season.
Hancock County saw Republican J. Scott Giddings file for Sheriff.
Omeka Peteway is a candidate for magistrate in Division 1; and Stephen Svokas in Division 3.
Former Delegate Randy Swartzmiller filed to become a member of the Hancock County Board of Education.
First to file in Ohio County was Commission President Don Nickerson - a Republican seeking a second term in office.
"I came to the courthouse because I always have work to do here," Nickerson said. "It makes it clear that I'm going to pursue re-election right out of the gate.
"I really like what I do."
Ohio County saw four other filings on Monday. Incumbent County Assessor Tiffany Hoffman, a Democrat, filed for re-election, while fellow Democrat Howard (John) Haglock filed for sheriff.
In addition, current magistrate Kevin Stryker filed in the Division 1 magistrate race, while incumbent Patty Murphy filed in Division 2.
- Candidates also filed with the city of Wheeling for municipal elections that happen in tandem with the May 14 primary election.
Tony Assaro filed for the Ward 1 council seat; Carlee Dittmar in Ward 2; and Julia Chaplin in Ward 5.
Candidates for the West Virginia Legislature file in Charleston, and two local lawmakers submitted paperwork for re-election on Monday. State Senate Majority Whip Ryan W. Weld, R-Brooke, filed for re-election, as did Delegate Charles Sheedy, R-Marshall.
Family Court Judge Joyce Dumbaugh Chernenko filed for re-election in Circuit 1, Division 1.
- Marshall County saw Commissioner Mike Ferro and Prosecuting Attorney Joe Canestraro - both Democratic incumbents - file for re-election.
Ed Coster and William Helms both filed as Republicans for sheriff, while Eric Buzzard will run as a Republican for assessor.
Mark A. Kerwood filed for magistrate in the Division 1 race; and Thomas P. Wood in Division 2.
Republican James M. Ruckman filed to run for surveyor, and John W. Miller will seek re-election to the Ohio County Board of Education.
- In Brooke County, Republican A.J. Thomas filed for a commission seat, while fellow Republican Thomas Oughton filed for assessor.
Daniell Diserio filed for magistrate in the Division 2 race.
- In Tyler County, Prosecuting Attorney D. Luke Furbee, a Republican, filed for re-election and Republican Dean Pratt entered the sheriff's race.
Lisa J. Jackson filed as a Republican for assessor, and there were two filings for magistrate - Brian Weigle in Division 1 and Lynnsie Cline in Division 2.
- Wetzel County saw Republican William Bell file for commission, and Democrat
Timothy Haught file for prosecuting attorney.
Republican Eric Daugherty entered the sheriff's race, and Democrat William Lemley filed for assessor.
Roger Spragg filed for magistrate in Division 1; and Donald Harris in Division 2.
Prospective candidates have until midnight on Saturday, Jan. 27 to file for office.
