By KATIE WHITE 3 min read

LISBON -- A contractor has been selected by the Beaver Local School District for the new athletic field house project.

During this month's board of education meeting the board approved Brock and Associate Builders for the work.

Brock was one of the two lowest bids for the project when bids were opened by the district back in November.

The bid submitted was $6.9 million. The other lowest bidder was C. Tucker Cope and Associates.

The new Derek Wolfe field house will help the district meet the needs of students, for their mental, physical, social and emotional well-being, and academic progress, District Superintendent Eric Lowe has said previously.

Plans call for the construction of a two-story facility that will feature a 50-yard practice field, weight room, batting cages, locker rooms, and more, on the main floor.

The second floor will feature a cardiovascular area and multipurpose sports simulator, as well as showers and restrooms.

In other matters during the board meeting, the district also recognized board members for School Board Appreciation Week.

Lowe thanked the board members for "their hard work behind the scenes that make many great things possible for the district."

He also said that the district is fortunate to have dedicated board members that are well informed and hold collaborative conversations focused on ensuring that the district strives to be the best it can be.

Lowe also thanked the St. Clair Township Police Department for its efforts in assisting the district with the annual school safety districtwide drill.

Also during the meeting Middle School Principal Jake Walgate announced that middle school staff would be presented with the Positive Behavioral Interventions Supports Bronze award soon.

High School Principal Aaron Walker said he was proud of the effort of student council and National Honor Society members for the success of the Carie Harris Memorial Food Drive that helped many district families.

Board President Jerry Barnett also credited district staff for their hard work and dedication to Beaver Local.

The board then approved:

-- Participation in winter indoor track for the 2023-24 season.

-- A proposal from the Ohio Floor company for recoating the gym floors.

-- A memorandum of understanding with Kent State University for the College Credit Plus Program for the 2024-25 school year.

-- James Wedgewood as bowling volunteer; Terry Bowyer and Brad Gilson as indoor track volunteers; and Brittany Hudson as school volunteer.

-- Supplemental contracts for 2023-24 school year for Dan Koehler, junior varsity baseball coach; and Katie Neville and Gary Burton as junior varsity softball coaches.

During the reorganization meeting held prior to the regular meeting, the board also approved board member Greg Eisenhart as vice president and setting regular board meetings for the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

The board also approved $10,000 in service funds, to cover expenses of board members and representatives of the board to attend seminars, workshops and other business actively incurred by and for the board.

The board also approved paying dues in the amount of $6,501 to the Ohio School Boards Association.
