LISBON -- The Columbiana County Commissioners recently approved multiple Healthy Aging Grant and Senior Services Levy contracts that will help senior citizens with home repairs and homemaker chores.
This is the time of year when many contracts for services need renewed or approved for the county Department of Job and Family Services, with more expected.
The Healthy Aging Grant is a new grant from the Ohio Department of Aging that DJFS Director Rachel Ketterman said will fill a need for low-income senior citizens for both indoor and outdoor home repairs or maintenance to improve safety, such as installation of a ramp, grab bars or railings.
The Senior Services Levy was approved by voters several years ago to help provide services to senior citizens in need.
For the Healthy Aging Grant, the contracts go from Nov. 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024, with the following contracts approved: MTIC Inc., home repair and plumbing services, $35,000 ceiling; Small Town USA LLP, home repair services, $25,000 ceiling; Martin Concrete, home repair services, $20,000 ceiling; Master Construction Co., home repair services, $20,000 ceiling; Boyle Heating and Air Conditioning, heating and cooling repair services, $15,000 ceiling; and Dillan Well Drilling Inc., well/septic repair services, $15,000 ceiling.
For the Senior Services Levy the following contracts were approved for home health aide, homemaker and chore services from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2024: Always Best Care, $20,000 ceiling; Chucks Home Care, $6,000 ceiling; Companion Care, $90,000; FTC Cleaning (homemaker and chore), $15,000 ceiling; Mother's Karing Touch, $15,000 ceiling, ShineOn LLC Cleaning Services, $40,000 ceiling and Small Towns USA LLP, $50,000 ceiling.
Representative payee services will be provided by Community Action Agency of Columbiana County with a $25,000 ceiling and Ohio Network for Innovation with a $5,000 ceiling. The funding source is the Senior Services Levy with a period from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2024.
Also approved through the Senior Services Levy was a contract from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2024 for extermination services from Economy Pest Control with a $7,000 ceiling.
In other business, the commissioners approved an agreement with Harris Local Government for managed print and mail services for the county auditor, approved an American Rescue Plan Act expense of $50,000 for asphalt work on Steubenville Pike Road in Yellow Creek Township and approved a grant agreement with Energy Harbor Nuclear Corp., operator of the Beaver Valley Power Station, for funding for the county Emergency Management Agency. The amounts for the grant are $278,934 for 2024 and $287,897 for 2025.
Commissioners Mike Halleck and Tim Weigle both explained how the EMA must prepare in case of a nuclear incident at the power plant since the county is within the 10-mile radius and the plant operator is obligated to help pay for EMA operations. Every two years, the county EMA must conduct a drill related to an incident at the plant that is graded by the state.
