WELLSVILLE - The Wellsville Board of Education opened its meeting Monday with a moment of silence to honor the late Joe Traina who passed away Sept. 22. Traina worked for the district as the supervisor of buildings and grounds.
During the meeting, Alaina Kilpatrick, director of curriculum and instruction, told the board about the plan to continue moving the district forward since the district has been moved from the needs academic improvement rating.
One of the things Kilpatrick said she was excited about is the publication by the Ohio Department of Education of the Restart/Readiness Assessments. Kilpatrick said she would be working with teachers at the end of this week and the beginning of next week to get them set up and familiar with the assessments.
The Restart/Readiness Assessments allows the teachers to create their own assessments from the previous published assessment question which the students can test with and get scored with immediate feedback and can be done online. This will allow the students and teachers to see how ready they are for annual state testing.
Kilpatrick also noted the recent revisions to the district's student manual to exclude phones in schools and revision of dress code have had positive results including less phone and dress code violations.
She also addressed school safety and the grants the district has received to allow them to purchase items such as handheld wands, two-way radios and cameras and more. She is looking at applying for another grant for more cameras and a PA system for DAW.
Under new business, the board approved a field trip to the American/World History Center and the Nursing Preceptor agreement with the Nursing Department of Franciscan University and Wellsville Local Schools to collaborate planning and provide clinical education and practice for nursing students in the Baccalaureate of Science degree program.
For fiscal matters, the board approved the financial report including the transfers and modification of funds, and any Then and Now certificates
For personnel, the board approved multiple hirings and a resignation.
Lisa Galeoti, short-hour employee at Garfield, submitted her resignation to be effective Oct. 4.
Brandi Meyers, Taylor Watson, Robin Weeda, Douglas Rose, Giovanna Pucci, Addison Copeland, Elizabeth Roberts and Michael Treloar were approved as substitutes.
Nate Harper was approved as entry year high school teacher mentor.
A motion to rescind hiring of Sheryll Hertzler, Level 1 Bus Driver, as of July 31 was approved along with a motion to approve Hertzler for Level 3 Bus Driver, retroactive back to July 31.
A motion for paying non-bachelor's degree substitutes a salary of $160 per day passed.
The board adjourned to an executive session to discuss personnel matters and returned to the regular session with no action taken.
The Wellsville Board of Education meets the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the media center at Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School. The next regular meeting of the Wellsville Board of Education is scheduled for Nov. 20.
