LIVERPOOL TOWNSHIP - Liverpool Township residents will be voting to decide which of two candidates they want to serve as Liverpool Township Trustee.
The 2,747 registered voters will decide between incumbent Keith H. Burke, 73, 1807 Annesley Road, and Brian T. Miller, 43, 2242 Macrum St.
Keith H. Burke
Burke is a 1969 graduate of East Liverpool High School who has also attended firefighting school and takes part in continuing education in Columbus for his position as a township trustee.
He started working in 1969 at Smith & Phillips where he stayed until 1972. From 1972 to 1982 he worked at Crucible. In 1983 he started work at J &L where he remained until 2000. He is also self-employed.
Burke said he takes part in a variety of community activities including volunteering with the VFW to place the veteran flags on poles around the township.
Burke is a widower after losing his wife Becky, whom he was married to for 50, a couple years ago. He has two married sons and four grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way.
He has not lost an election for public office and has held the position of trustee since 2000.
He has been appointed to the Liverpool Township Steering Committee and the Liverpool Township Board Member for the Columbiana County Health Board Association.
Burke said his qualifications for the trustee position include his 24 years of serving as a trustee in which time he has built a rapport with the engineer's office and worked with them on replacing the Valley Avenue culvert and aided in in the issuance of Grant 2 for paving which the township receives every 10 years.
Burke said he is seeking reelection because as a lifelong resident he enjoys giving back to the community, which he has done by serving as trustee for 24 years and with the fire department for 13 years.
"Liverpool Township is one of the best and safest communities around and I look forward to keeping our police, fire and roads the best," Burke said.
Burke said he considers his biggest accomplishments during his time as trustee to be the building of the new administration building with no tax increase and working to build the infrastructure of the town with no tax increase.
He noted that the township was able to purchase two new police vehicles with the help of grants along with purchasing new road trucks, a new excavator, road mowers, and two new fire trucks and the township is now in the process of purchasing a new backhoe, all with no tax increase.
Burke, who has never been convicted of a felony, said he believes residents should vote for him because he has and will continue to work with other trustees to keep moving the township forward.
"I have 24 years experience and many contacts to help our township get what it needs and to keep being successful and safe in everything we do," Burke said.
Brian T. Miller
Miller is a graduate of East Liverpool High School who worked at Carts from 1999 to 2006. He then worked with the Liverpool Township Road Department from 2006 to 2017. He currently works for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) where he has been since 2017.
He is married and he and his wife, Abbie, have one son.
Miller has not been appointed to a public body and has not held a public office, but he ran twice as a candidate for Liverpool Township trustee. He ran in 2019 and 2021 and lost both elections.
He listed his qualifications for trustee as being a lifelong resident of the township who has worked for the township for 11 years and having an in-depth understanding of how the township works and runs.
Miller said he is running for trustee "to take care of and see that the township is run and maintained by an elected official that has the best interest of the land, offices and people in mind."
Miller, who has never been convicted of a felony, said he feels voters should elect him because he believes he is the younger, motivated candidate with integrity.
"I would bring a new generation of perspective and ideas to the table," Miller said.
