LISBON -- Attendance at the Beaver Local Middle School is on the rise.
During the September board of education meeting, middle school principal Mason Seachrist reported that attendance improved by about 3.5 percent at his building and he appreciated the effort that went into making that happen.
Seachrist also shared with the board that students will be learning social inclusion and violence prevention through Start with Hello activities conducted by the guidance counselor.
District Superintendent Eric Lowe and board members also said they were pleased to witness the amount of friendly competition between student athletes and staff ahead of the Beaver Local and East Liverpool rivalry football game earlier in the month.
High school principal Aaron Walker said there was a lot of excitement centered around that game and he enjoyed that both schools showed "a lot of pride."
He added that students "carried themselves well" for the rivalry game in which Beaver Local won.
In other business the board approved:
• Membership with CORAS (Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools).
• A memorandum of understanding with the Columbiana County Mental Health for the Suicide Prevention Education and Kindness (SPEAK)for grades 6-12.
• The NEOLA Resolution to make provisional changes to board policies and administrative guidelines and forms to comply with HB 33.
• High school advisors for the 2023-24 school year.
-- Salary adjustments for Dawn Hamilton and Jonathan McCullough.
• The hiring of Amy Hulse as bus driver, Kiley Dray as bus driver and Tom Owens as custodian.
• Kevin Palmer as substitute custodian.
• Kristen Youst as softball volunteer and Jason Youst as girls basketball volunteer.
• Molly Young, Allison Ash, Katie Neville, Samantha Smith, Amy Wokski and Terra Schwerha as mentors.
• Supplemental contracts for Bobby Flint, head baseball coach; Jason Plumm, assistant baseball coach; Noah Land, assistant baseball coach; Mark Cashdollar, head softball coach; Kelly Jones, assistant softball coach; Nick Sesonsky as strength coach (spring and summer).
