Annual Riverfest returns to New Cumberland

NEW CUMBERLAND - Every fall, the city of New Cumberland celebrates the changes of the season during the fourth weekend of September with its two-day Riverfest.
The bulk of the activities occur around River Avenue.
On Saturday, Sept. 23, after the Riverfest 5K walk/run at 9 a.m., where proceeds benefit Oak Glen athletics, New Cumberland Mayor Will White kicks off the opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. with city Boy Scout troop #38 color guard and the Oak Glen High School band. Signups for the 5K continue at 8 a.m. in Hines Park.
Live entertainment will be offered beginning at noon and the fireworks at dusk.
Jim Hallisey and friends will perform a tribute in memory of John Edwards, a Riverfest musical mainstay who passed in December 2021, at noon.
Michele's Dance Studio will perform a showcase at 1 p.m.
Then the following acts take the stage: Blind Colours and Bill Crawford at 3 p.m., Led Foot Lover at 5 p.m. and Eli Lambi and The Mojo Kings at 6:45 p.m.
The two-day Riverfest art show also opens at noon and runs until noon Sunday, Sept. 24. This is the 14th year for the art show, which focuses on youth interpreting a fall theme this year. Judges will select their favorites and award ribbons and monetary prizes.
A Riverfest Car Show will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the city fireman's field off north Chester Street near the New Cumberland fire station.
The event also includes inflatables and games as well as 50 food and craft vendors.
Axe throwing and pumpkin painting also will be offered along with visits from Bluey and Poppy from 2 to 4 p.m. and facepainting.
After kicking off Sunday morning with a church service and Christian band called Redwood at 11 a.m., festivities continue with the New Cumberland Little Miss Pageant at 1 p.m., another dance showcase at 1:30 p.m. by Express Your Talent studio and live music by the West Liberty Steel Drums at 3 p.m.
Admission is free to both days' activities except for an art show taught by local artists Nancy Wright and Joyce Beatty at noon Sunday for middle school age youth only. The cost is $5 each, and pre-registration is needed as the class size is limited. All materials are provided.
