Second Wings and Wheels event expected to be much bigger

EAST LIVERPOOL -- The Columbiana County Airport's Wings and Wheels event returns for its second year after an 18-year hiatus.
The event which will take place at the Columbiana County Airport on Aug. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with cars starting to arrive at 8 a.m., is expected to draw a large number of classic cars and planes from Columbiana County and beyond.
Attendees at the event, which is sponsored by Power GM of Calcutta, will be able to view classic cars and planes, planes in flight, skydiving, sports planes and antique plans.
The event will feature multiple food vendors, displays by several emergency management and public agencies along with county agencies and sponsor Power GM and a large Chinese auction which is expected to have enough items to fill an airport hangar.
The Air Heritage Museum in Beaver County will be bringing its C47 Military Transport Aircraft to the event again this year.
All proceeds from the event will be donated toward the training of Solace, a German Shepherd puppy who will be trained as a search and rescue K-9 for the county wide search and rescue team being organized by Fire Chief Dave McCoy of the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department.
There is no charge to attend the event. Participants wanting to show their vehicles are not being charged an entry fee, but are being asked to give a donation. The first 100 cars entered will receive dash plaques.
"The event's planning committee has been busy putting many hours of planning into the event and has been a real help to the airport in the planning," Columbiana County Airport President Jim Pusateri said.
Pusateri also noted that his wife Monica has been busy helping Penny Clark, whose idea it was to bring the show back, go all over the county collecting donations for the Chinese auction.
The airport is providing a donation to the senior class of Beaver Local Schools for their help with parking during the event.
"We are trying to reach out into the community and become more a part of the community with different events that we are doing," Pusateri said.
Last year's event, which had 297 cars participating, raised funds for the Columbiana County Police Dog Fund and St. Clair Township's Police Dog Fund.
Pusateri noted that Power GM, who also sponsored the event last year, has significantly increased the amount of money they put into the event which shows they are behind the program and and behind the fire department.
"We are really committed to do everything we can to help them (Calcutta Fire Department) as they have helped us so much," Pusateri said.
The event is weather permitting. Should the event need to be postponed due to inclement weather, an announcement will be made in advance and the event rain date will be Sept. 3.
