NEW CUMBERLAND -- As the school year approaches, Hancock County Schools officials are working to fill many of their key positions.
As part of last Monday's regular meeting, the county Board of Education continued its work to approve a series of personnel recommendations made by Superintendent Dan Enich.
Faculty and staff reported for their first day of the year Thursday, with the first instructional day scheduled for this coming Wednesday.
According to Sarah Parsons, director of personnel for the school district, between hires and appointments already approved by the board, and some recommendations set to be made in the coming weeks, most of the county's teacher positions will be filled.
"We're in good shape," she said.
She noted the only known teacher vacancy to start the school year would be a Spanish teacher post at Weir Middle School.
Some service personnel spots will still need addressed.
The board is set to meet in special session at 5:30 p.m., Monday, at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center to consider several other personnel matters, including the assignment of assistant principal positions at Weirton Elementary and Oak Glen High.
Among the items approved by the board this week were an unpaid leave of absence for Julia Macaluso and the retirement of Dawn R. Petrovich.
The resignations of Julie Zoellers as assistant volleyball coach at Oak Glen High, and Rachel Wright-McKay as assistant softball coach at Oak Glen High were approved, as was the assignment of Patrick McGillian as head wrestling coach at Oak Glen Middle.
Other assignments approved Monday were Haley Davis, Tayler Davis and Crystal Tice, all as Supervisory Aide/ECCAT for first grade at Weirton Elementary School, and Trisha Barile as Supervisory Aide II-IV at Weirton Elementary School.
In other business, the board approved Jebbia's Market as produce supplier for the school year, and US Foods as non-food supplier, and declared a single blodgett oven and a double stack Southbend oven at Weir Middle as surplus items.
