LISBON -- Monday was the filing deadline at the Columbiana County Board of Elections for write-in candidates, and according to Columbiana County Board of Elections Director Kim Fusco several hats have been tossed into the ring.
Fusco reported at Wednesday's board of elections meeting eight write-in candidates are hoping to have their names penciled in on general election ballots Nov. 7.
In East Liverpool, Mark Douglas jumped in the mayoral race, joining Darlene Kinsey, Shane McKinnon and Bobby Smith. Thomas Clark is a write-in for Council At Large in East Liverpool.
Four write-ins join Karen Dash and Martin Thorn Jr. in seeking one of four seats on Wellsville Council. The write-in candidates are Cindy Mick, Barbara Reeck, Aaron Smith and Debra Cataldo.
In Center Township, write-in Samuel Frank will challenge Tim Novak for one seat. Adam Booth is a write-in for the Fairfield Township fiscal officer, the only candidate for the position.
The final write-in candidate is vying for one of two seats on the Leetonia Board of Education as Ashley Huston joined Marilyn Heddleson, Michele Votaw and Anthony Pelsnik.
In other election news, the board agreed to reconsider the local option petition from Nikki's Market LLC for carry-out Sunday sales. Fusco explained the business' application for a D-6 (Sunday sales) permit had expired which led to the petition being invalidated. It was later learned petitioner was advised by Ohio Division of Liquor Control (OHLQ) to allow it to expire and circulate the petition as a C1 and C2 (carry-out) application. However, Nikki's Market was already a permit holder of a C1 and C2 license. OHLQ confirmed the information and the Columbiana County prosecutor's office agreed that the petition should not have been invalidated.
The board also approved the certification of the suit performed on Ohio Issue 1 as presented.
