LISBON -- A project to replace the chiller and cooling tower for air conditioning at the Columbiana County Jail could carry a price tag of half a million dollars, Commissioner Mike Halleck said.
The commissioners agreed Wednesday to advertise for bids for construction of the chiller and cooling tower, with bids due at the commissioners' office, 105 S. Market St., by 9 a.m. July 19.
Halleck said the jail is going on 30 years old and the air conditioning system is on its last leg, warning that the price is excessive. Renderings and plans for the project have been done.
When asked how commissioners will fund the project, he said they haven't decided what fund the money will come from, but said most likely the capital improvement fund.
"We have money set aside for these things," he said.
In other business, commissioners approved two contracts for the county Department of Job and Family Services Back to School Shoe Program for children in need. The contract with Shoe Sensation in Salem has a contract ceiling of $67,500 and the contract for Shoe Department in East Liverpool has a contract ceiling of $82,500. Contract periods are from July 17 to Sept. 30, with funding from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
"How much of that is used?" Commissioner Tim Weigle asked.
CCDJFS Director Rachel Ketterman said every dime will be used. She explained that each child who qualifies will obtain one voucher with a $125 value, with at least 1,200 vouchers expected for the program. She said a lot of times, the kids can get at least two pairs of shoes and some socks.
Also at Ketterman's recommendation, commissioners approved a State of Ohio contract for CCDJFS with Cintas Corporation for floor mat services from July 31, 2023 to July 31, 2025. CCDJFS canceled its own contract with Cintas in favor of going through the state of Ohio, which she said will cost less.
The commissioners authorized board President Roy Paparodis to sign a letter of support for Columbiana County Mental Health for the homeless crisis response program activities at the Bryce W. Kendall Home on the Counseling Center of Columbiana County campus in Lisbon.
Permission was granted for the Lisbon Area Chamber of Commerce to use the courthouse parking lot for the Christmas in July event, being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Lisbon.
The next meeting of county commissioners is 9 a.m. July 12 in the downtown courthouse.
