WELLSVILLE --During Monday's Board of Education meeting, Wellsville Superintendent Richard Bereschik told the board that the Garfield Elementary Block Party and Outdoor Education Center dedication was a big successes with over 250 adults and children attending .
He also informed that 59% of the third-grade students meet the requirements of the third-grade reading guarantee by way of state testing.
Bereschik also commented on the opening of the ELCH Wellsville Clinic and how the school made arrangements and bussed students from each school to the clinic for physicals.
Board members had no old business to discuss.
During the new business portion of the meeting with a unanimous vote, board members approved 52 students for graduation, three of whom will graduate with an associate's degree; a service agreement with the Columbiana County ESC Services for the 2023-2024 school year; an agreement with ACCESS for broadband for communications and technology services; a service agreement with Envision Academy (Christian Children's Home) to provide necessary services for a court place Wellsville student; a resolution to renew the Permanent Improvement Levy; and, a change of date for the June 19 board meeting to June 26.
During the fiscal matters portion of the meeting, board members approved unanimously the financial report as read by Treasurer/CFO Marcy Thompson; to approve the cancellation of the surety bond for the treasurer, superintendent, and board members through Traveler's Insurance, and use instead the liability insurance for public officials through Schools of Ohio Risk Sharing Authority (SORSA); approve SORSA for the district's property, fleet, liability insurance through McBane Insurance.
Board member aproved the five-year forecast as presented at the Nov. 21 meeting for May submission due to negotiations not being completed.
Thompson told the board members that maintaining the surety bond would be duplicate coverage and the board would get more coverage under SORSA.
For personnel matters, the board unanimously approved to give the superintendent authority to offer the principals a maximum of five additional days to perform duties, accepted the resignations of WHS math teacher, Lisa Depaola and WHS art teacher, Olivia Griffith, and Treasurer/CFO Marcy Thompson effective Aug. 1; accepted the retirement of Daw Elementary teacher Lisa Smith, effective May 31; renewed the one-year contract for Rachel Ulbright, LPN; approved a two-year contract for Amber Brown as administrative assistant to the superintendent and treasurer effective May 24; and, approved Derrick Spann and Marcus Dalrymple as assistant varsity football coaches.
Principal days are to perform duties necessary by the superintendent for the 2022-2023 school year and will be paid at their daily rate. Bereschik noted that the additional days would be for instances of interviews that would take place after the end of the school year and changes that would be made over the summer. The principals would be paid for those days if needed their regular daily rate.
Bereschik said that in regard to Ulbright, that's with all the students they have on diabetic pumps and other medical issues it's nice to have a second nurse to assist with that.
Board members voted to go into executive session to prepare for negotiations and discuss personnel matters with no action taken.
The Wellsville Board of Education meets the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m., in the Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School Media Center. The next scheduled meeting will be held on June 26, which is the fourth Monday, due to the regular meeting date falling on the federal holiday of Juneteenth.
