LISBON -- A longtime school nurse who will retire at the end of this month from the Beaver Local School District was "invaluable" to the district, especially through the COVID-19 pandemic, school officials said.
The board of education approved the retirement resignation of Teresa Ash during this month's meeting.
District Superintendent Eric Lowe said that Ash has been an invaluable member of the school community and that her knowledge, ability to wear many hats and her hard work are all things that will be a challenge to replace.
He also said that the district was "blessed to have her leading things during the pandemic."
"Her expertise and decision making enabled the district to make it through those tough times," he said.
Lowe offered Ash congratulations on her retirement and said she will be leaving "big shoes to fill."
Also during the meeting Lowe shared that high school graduation will be held at 7 p.m. May 26 at the football stadium, weather permitting.
In the event of inclement weather it will be moved inside.
He also said that the last day of school for students is May 31.
Furthermore, during his report Lowe said that Beaver Local had six athletes qualify for the middle school state track meet across five events.
Board President Brian McKenzie said that he appreciated the board, community, and treasurer Stacy Williams and Lowe's collaborative efforts in supporting the students who traveled to worlds to compete in the Robotics Competition, noting that is was a wonderful experience and a great learning opportunity for the students.
McKenzie also thanked everyone who came out to support the Autism Walk which benefits the Beaver Local students.
The event is led by the St. Clair Township Police Department and has become an annual event.
McKenzie shared his appreciation for being able to use the facility for this event.
Also during the meeting students were recognized for their strong character and improvement over the nine weeks period, with a presentation of CLASP awards by Ms. Rettos, director of Special Programs.
The awards from the Lions Club were presented to elementary students.
In other business, the board approved:
-- Non-renewal of all substitutes approved on an "as needed basis" or extended time for the 2023-24 school year as of June 30, 2023 and to advise substitutes interested in being considered for the 2023-24 school year to place such in writing to the superintendent prior to the start of the school year.
-- A contract with PsyCare for the 2023-24 school year.
-- The list of graduates for the Beaver Local High School Class of 2023.
-- An agreement with Nutrition, Inc. for the 2023-24 school year.
-- A four-year contract with Johnson Controls, effective July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2027, for preventative maintenance services at a cost of $25,704 for the first year.
-- Sierriah Klein and Dawn Metts as PTO volunteers for the 2022-23 school year.
-- Family Medical Leave Act requests for Jessica Lucas, payroll administrator, and Kari Miller, high school teacher.
-- The following as 2023 summer help: Brandon Morgan, technology; Logan Kirkbride, maintenance; and Brady Smith, maintenance.
-- A certified one-year contract renewal for Sara Kauffman for the 2023-24 school year.
-- An addendum to the superintendent's employment contract.
-- Stacy Mcnary as paraprofessional substitute for the 2023-24 school year.
-- A supplemental contract for Kelly McKenzie as faculty manager for the 2023-24 school year.
-- Authorizing the district treasurer to make appropriation modifications and request an amended certificate for fiscal year 2023.
