EL Area Garden Club to hold annual flower show and sale at community center

EAST LIVERPOOL - The East Liverpool Area Community & Learning Center at 110 Maine Blvd. in the North Side area of the city is always open to new programs and activities. As we prepare to say goodbye to spring and welcome summertime there has been a surge of new and exciting things that will take place at the center to entertain and educate our visitors.
This Saturday, May 20, the East Liverpool Area Garden Club will bring its annual Flower Show & Sale to the Community Center this year. Proceeds from this annual fund raiser for the club are used to beautify the community. Their projects include the floral baskets in Thompson Park, Umbrella Alley in the downtown and the entrance to the city off state Route 11 Southbound. The 35 club members will donate their favorite flowers, plants and shrubs from their yards and gardens for sale at reduced prices. The hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., unless they sell out earlier.
This year the club chose the community center for its event with its 150 parking spaces near the front door, the handicapped ramp entrance and the amount of available space. The Arts & Crafts Room will be the primary location for the sale. The adjoining side yard and several other rooms will be available as needed. Payment for purchases may be with check or cash only. One club member has donated her handmade floral quilt to be raffled off during the plant sale. There will also be a bake sale going on.
Margaret Myers, long time East Liverpool High School art teacher, plans to offer Art Classes at the Community Center this summer on Wednesday mornings from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. to youths from 7 to 12 years old. The classes include several types of art media. Myers is donating her time but there will be a charge of $5 per student per session to cover some of the cost of supplies.
Class size is limited to 24 students each Wednesday. Prospective students may make reservations in advance by coming to the center or calling during regular hours from noon to 5 p.m. at 330-303-2110. If a message is left it should include a phone number for a return call. Prospective students can sign up for more than one class throughout the summer program.
Students from East Liverpool High School under the direction of instructor Josh Ludwig have completed construction of the Butterfly Garden on the west side of the center. There is an excellent view of the new garden from inside the center through the large window in the lounge area and also from several hallway windows. The plants that will attract the butterflies are all in place now in the garden that is shaped like a figure 8.
HHH Foundation Director and Rotary Committee Chairman Linda Henderson will be setting up educational materials and pictures in the N.A. Room. These will help educate visitors to the center about the dainty and beautiful Monarchs and Swallow Tail butterflies. Butterflies will find the center a good stopping off place on their migration south to Mexico each year. In the meantime, lesser varieties of butterflies will enjoy the garden and its vegetation during the summer.
Major improvements have been made in the Farmers Party & Meeting Room just in time for the summer season. Service Club meetings, city testing of potential employees, parties and programs in the Farmers Room will all benefit from the two new independent heating and air conditioning units. Also a new speaker system has just been installed there. The Auditorium, Banquet Hall and the Movie Room at the center already had their own air-conditioning systems. A new sound system has lavaliere microphones and 12 ceiling speakers and will greatly improves the acoustics in the room.
On June 6, at the Legacy & Legends Lecture, the subject will be the East Liverpool Museum of Ceramics. Speaking will be longtime Executive Director of the Museum Susan Weaver. Years ago the city post office building was converted to the museum that is a must place to visit in the downtown. It has attracted thousands of visitors to our community over the years. The program begins at the center at 7 p.m.
The foundation will kick off the signing up of members for the eighth season with the first of six lectures in September. Members donate $100 each year to belong. Over the years this has resulted in around $6,000 each year to help with the operating expenses at the center.
The Fitzjohn Music Room at the center has recently been reserved for a program entitled "Music & Movement for Toddlers" to be held from 10 to 11 a.m. each Wednesday from June 21 to July 31. Amy Dunlap and Katy Muldoon both are graduates of East Liverpool High School and have recently returned to their home community. They decided to work together on this project this summer. The Thursday Classic Movie Nites in the wide-screen, surround sound and air conditioned theatre at the center will continue through the summer months under the direction of Teresa James.
