LISBON -- The Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities met Tuesday and approved the creation of a new position for a part-time secretary through the Pathways to Careers Grant, hiring Annie Toot for the job.
The Pathways to Careers Grant helps students who have demonstrated a specific interest or abilities in data or numerical interests obtain opportunities and apprenticeships.
The board also improved maintenance work to the Robert Bycroft School, agreeing to enter into a service agreement Clean Team Commercial Cleaning at cost of $16,750 to strip and re-wax 11,357 square feet at the school.
"Our gym floor is in horrible condition," Superintendent Bill Devon said. "We were already planning to do the gym floor and the cafeteria and decided to go ahead and do the common areas and that gives our people the opportunity to really deep clean and do the classrooms."
The board approved renewal of membership to the Family and Children First Council -- a mandated council that provides a way for the leaders of agencies all providing services at the same time to work together to help the families they serve -- at the cost of $5,500.
In other matters, the board approved renewal of the its group health insurance with the Stark County Educational Service Center, with plan changes related to co-pays and set monthly premium increases, and increased non-bargaining employees' current premium for the first time in 10 years to put all employees at the same rate.
The board passed items relating to one individual option waiver and two level one waivers as approved by the Ethics Committee. Last month's minutes and bills were also approved.
Devon also discussed the recently held The Arc of Ohio Northeast Branch 12th Annual Family Advocacy Conference. The conference was held April 21 at Avion on the Water and The Arc's mission is to "raise public awareness and providing education and advocacy to families of individuals with developmental disabilities." Devon said the event, which the board helped sponsor, was a success.
"They had some great speakers and there were just about 200 people that attended," he said. "It was very nice and a great event."
