LISBON -- Results of the May 2 special election remained the same after the Columbiana County Board of Elections certified the final tally of votes during a meeting Friday afternoon.
The final tabulation included a handful of absentee ballots that arrived in the mail by the deadline to count and some provisional ballots from Election Day approved for inclusion after voter information was confirmed.
The Salem schools bond and levy issue gained a pair of favorable votes but also gained another 11 votes against the measure for a final total of 907 votes in favor and 1,151 votes against.
The Perry Township Police police/fire levy renewal gained three more favorable votes, with a final tally of 521 votes in favor and 139 votes against.
Totals for all four liquor options for Cadence Vault in East Liverpool, Oasis Golf in Salem (which included an option plus Sunday sales) and Pondi's in Lisbon remained the same as election night.
Only 15 precincts were open for the special election, with 2,139 voters casting ballots out of 12,360 registered voters in those precincts. A precinct-by-precinct breakdown from the May 2 special election is available on the election board website at columbiana.boe.ohio.gov.
An internal audit of the May special election will be conducted, though not mandated, with the results to be reported at a future meeting.
According to a synopsis of the recent meeting provided by Deputy Director Bryce Miner, the board will evaluate several polling locations over the next few weeks for their viability for the Aug. 8 special election, which will include State Issue 1, Elevating the Standards to Qualify for and to Pass Any Constitutional Amendment. All precincts will be open for this election.
The board approved outsourcing the absentee by mail process to Graphic Village for the Aug. 8 special election. The hours for in-office absentee voting are available on the website.
It was announced that the Secretary of State summer conference will be held June 27 and 28. Also the Ohio Association of Election Officials regional meeting will be hosted by Columbiana County in 2024 since 2023 was cancelled due to early voting for the Aug. 8 special election.
