St. Clair Twp. Police Dept. to sponsor Autism Awareness Day

CALCUTTA --The St. Clair Township Police Department will be sponsoring its Third Annual Autism Awareness Day from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at the Beaver Local High School track. Participants will be invited to take part in the autism walk on the track and to also learn more about autism, including its effect on the entire family. A "Touch A Truck" area will be set up allowing children to actually be able to examine police, fire, ambulance, construction, military, and tow truck vehicles. There will also be a Stat Medevac helicopter on site. A bounce house will be set up to provide sensory activities as well as a wide variety of fun-filled activities.
St. Clair police officer Herman Potts explained the police department's willingness to sponsor the event. "We want to bring awareness to people of the struggle that the individual and their families face on a daily basis with autism," he said. "Our goal is to make this a more inclusive community."
"It's really nice to have a community event such as this," said Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities superintendent Bill Devon. "We truly appreciate the St. Clair Police Department stepping up once again to promote recognition of what people with autism go through almost every day. People with autism need to be recognized and embraced. With there being a new definition of autism, we are finding that we are only recognizing a small fraction of the actual autism cases in the county. An event such as this enables us to get the word out about autism so that we can properly identify those who are in need of our services."
