WELLSVILLE -- Allen Glover, Ohio State certified arborist, addressed the Wellsville Village Council Tuesday regarding his assessment of hazardous trees and their removal at Hammond Park.
Glover looked at dying trees above the playgrounds, pavilion and ballfield and is preparing an estimate which included the removal of the trees, stumps and reseeding the area.
Glover said that approximately 25 percent, or about 120, trees in the park could be considered hazardous and need to be addressed.
Fire Chief Barry Podwell said construction was still going on at the fire department. Podwell turned in some of the items such as payroll, fuel expense and usage of vehicles during the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine and received a phone call from Norfolk Southern with a couple of questions regarding the reimbursement.
The Wellsville Fire Department will take part in a flood wall training on April 15.
Village administrator Jeff Cope said that he sees the paperwork for the same people with the same properties coming through the court each month, but the people aren't showing up to court and they need to do something about that. The village is looking into pressing charges or license suspensions for those who don't show up.
Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah Yu said that the village's annual income could be about 10 percent higher than originally estimated due to more income tax than estimated coming in.
Wah submitted a grant application for the marina dredging project to Congressman Bill Johnson's office. Mayor Bob Boley has received letters of support for the project from many local businesses and the Columbiana County Commissioners.
Wah received a phone call from Johnson's office telling her that the dredging has a clause where the Army Corps of Engineers had to have already approved the project. Dallis Dawson and Associates helped to write the $1 million grant application in which the village has agreed to a fund match of $25,000.
Council voted to pay invoices totaling $13,183.44.
Boley said the new medical center coming to Wellsville has a lot of work to be done on it yet and will not open until April 3.
Boley wants to issue a proclamation naming June 17 Brad Gray Day and present Gray with a key to the city.
The rumors that the box cars on the tracks in the lower end of town are carrying dirt from East Palestine is false, Boley said. The dirt from East Palestine is being moved in trucks.
The carrying of the cross, which has not been held for the last couple of years due to Covid, will resume this year. It will be held on Good Friday, April 7 starting at noon at the gazebo.
The Easter drive through trunk and treat has been rescheduled from April 1 to April 2 from 3 to 5 p.m. The rescheduling is due to a doubleheader taking place on the ballfield on April 1.
The Property Committee will meet in council Chambers on April 4 at 5 p.m.
Wellsville Village Council meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. in council chambers at Wellsville Village Hall, 1200 Main St. The next meeting is scheduled for April 4.
