ST. CLAIR --Fire Chief Dave McCoy, Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department, announced plans to purchase a new fire truck during the March 27, St. Clair Township Trustees meeting.
According to McCoy the contract for the new custom truck which is estimated to take anywhere from 36 to 40 months to build has been signed. Estimated price of the new truck is over $800,000. The price includes over $60,000 in equipment for the truck.
The new truck when it arrives will replace truck 32, which will be 30 years old by the time the department has the new truck to replace it with.
The fire department is the recipient of and ODNR (Ohio Department of Natural Resources) forestry grant of $10,000 which will be used to purchase a slide in skid unit for the brush truck and materials for four six-inch dry hydrants. The grant only covers materials so the department will take care of the installations. The department is also responsible for the $11,000 grant match.
The dry hydrant will be permanently fixed hydrants that will allow the fire trucks to draft water as needed from a lake or pond.
McCoy said he would like to try to add about four dry hydrants a year throughout the area.
McCoy also told the trustees that the department is preparing to submit to insurance a claim for approximately $85,000 for equipment such as air packs and gear that need to be replaced due to the department responding to the train derailment in East Palestine.
The department responded to 15 calls back-to-back on Saturday night.
The fire department's fish fry will be held April 7 from 3-7 p.m. Tickets are $10. The department is in need of volunteers to help with the event.
Police Chief Brian McKenzie said that Officer Hildebrandt completed his first week of K9 school and did really well.
Road Supervisor Scott Barrett asked the trustees to approve several requisitions for the road department including one for 440 tons of road salt at a cost of $24,151.60 and one for 100 tons of limestone for the chip and seal program in the amount of $2,027, plus an unknown surcharge to be added.
Barrett also requested the trustees approve $4,621.23, for repairs to one of the road department's trucks.
The trustees unanimously approved all three requests.
Trustees approved the purchase of a new printer for administration office at a cost of $6,273 which includes service and parts, to opt in to the new national opioid settlement and the annual budget of $5,027,077.93 for 2023.
Fiscal Officer Deborah Dawson requested the trustees approve payment of bills totaling $195,568.63.
St. Clair Township Trustees meet every other Tuesday at 4 p.m., at the Township Administration Building. The next meeting is scheduled for April 7.
