EAST LIVERPOOL - Collectors of Hall China will be gathering in East Liverpool April 14-15 at the East Liverpool Community and Learning Center for the 21st Hall China Collectors Group convention.
Event organizers LaVerne Thomas Vertrees and Donna Gray both believe this may be the first time the convention has been held in East Liverpool.
"People in East Liverpool have been extremely gracious in extending their advice and their facilities to us," Vertrees said. "I am deeply grateful to the people of East Liverpool, it's a wonderful town."
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this will be the first time in four years that the convention will be held. Vertrees would like to see as many people as possible attend, wanting to bring pottery back to the pottery capital of the capital of the country.
Attendees will have the chance to view, buy or sell pottery/china, learn about pottery, and participate in many other activities including a tour of the Fiesta Tableware Company which produces items carry the Fiesta Tableware Company mark and items with the Hall mark.
The sale and auction which will take place on April 15, is free to attend and open to the public. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend. The sale begins at 9 a.m. and will offer both items that are commonly available and quite rare items. There will be a preview for the auction at 1:30 p.m., and the auction will start at 2 p.m.
The sale and auctions will feature items from attendees' personal collections.
Anyone wishing to participate in the convention event will need to register and pay a $40 registration fee which covers all activities except the teapot decorating class.
For an additional fee, up to 25 attendees can take part in a decal decorating class where they will decorate an ivory football teapot. The teapots will then be kiln fired and shipped to the owners. The cost for this which includes the teapot, a $15 shipping fee and $69.99 class fee is $84.99
In addition to a tour of the Fiesta Tableware Company, convention attendees will also take a tour of the Thompson House and attend a reception at the Museum of Ceramics where they will hear a program called "The Hallway" presented by museum curator Susan Weaver.
The event will have a display called "The Showroom" which will features items on display brought by collectors to show. These items are ones that the collectors feel are most precious of most interesting. According to Vertrees the items are just what people like and often there will be pieces many have never seen before.
The last event of the convention will be a pizza party with a gift exchange and a talk on ceramic designer Don Schreckengost by Weaver. This will also be the time for raffle winners to pick their prizes.
Gray said that it never occurred to her that Hall would close in during her lifetime, so this convention features a great group of collectors and is a great chance for people to get together.
