ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP -- Trustees voted Monday all-in-favor to accept a bid for the construction of Columbiana Avenue Part B-Old Frederick Town Road Water Line Extension Phase 2B.
The township sent the project out for bid and bids were opened on Feb. 10.
Of the bids received, the township decided that Mike Pusateri Excavating Inc., of East Liverpool was the lowest and best with a bid of $$1.921,472.00 and will be awarded the contract. The trustees will be meeting with Pusateri Excavating next week to sign the contract. Work is expected to start soon on the project and be completed this year.
In his report St. Clair Police Chief Brian McKenzie announced that Michael Lukan who was charged was aggravated robbery with a fire arm, a first-degree felony was sentenced on Jan. 25, to a minimum of nine years and a maximum of 13 ¢ years. He received another three years to be served consecutively for the use of a firearm.
Lukan was found guilty for a 2019 armed robbery at Buckeye Pharmacy. According to McKenzie, Lukan walked into the pharmacy where four employees were working with a pistol. He also said his officeers worked the case and caught a break on it in March 2022, which led them to Lukan and allowed them to recover some evidence.
"This guy is gone for 12 years minimum. That's good work. I'm proud of the guys in what they did with this and we have been fortunate the last couple of robberies we were able to identify those involved," McKenzie said. "You guys all did a nice job and I'm proud of you."
McKenzie also noted that in January the department saw a slight increase in theft and drugs.
Fire Chief Dave McCoy noted in his report that fire calls for the year were at 22 and EMS calls were at 10. He also said that the big issue was the East Palestine derailment.
McCoy said that the department lost some equipment during the derailment. But he does not yet have a final word on what to do with that equipment and that he plans on reaching out to a HAZMAT official to try to get questions answered.
St. Clair Township trustees meet every other Monday at 4 p.m., in the Community Room of the Administration Building. The next meeting will be Feb. 27.
The Administration Building will be closed on Feb. 20, in observance of Presidents Day.
