Donation gives students the opportunity to participate in contest

EAST LIVERPOOL --Thanks to a generous donor, Westgate Middle School fifth-graders were given the opportunity to participate in a "Pay It Forward" essay contest. This donor has provided funds for this contest the past two years and wishes to remain anonymous with the hope of spreading kindness and instilling in students the importance of helping others. Students were provided with the prompt: "If I had $100 this Christmas to donate, I would give it to------------." The essays were judged on the following criteria: five well-structured paragraphs, minimal grammatical errors, and content quality. There were over 140 submitted essays that focused on generosity and helping others.

Honoring Make a Wish Foundation in loving memory of her cousin, Bailey, Bella Johnson.
Honoring Akron Children's Hospital, Dallas Cole.

Honoring her mom, Emily Puhac.
This year's top finalists received a certificate, WalMart gift card and will have $100 donated in their name to the charity that they focused on in their essay:

Honoring St. Judes Hospital, Brooklyn McCready.
Honoring East Liverpool City Hospital for the services they provide our community, Aubryonna Potts.
Honoring UPMC Mercy Hospital for the care they gave her father, Jennavieve Johnston.
