EAST LIVERPOOL -- An embattled former East Liverpool police officer is back in the headlines again, after recently filing a lawsuit against the city alleging he was begrudged the overtime pay he had earned.
According to court documents filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio (Eastern Division), Christopher Green and his attorney Kimberly Kendall, who is based in Cleveland, are asking for a jury to award him more than $65,000 in overtime wages earned by him while he was employed as a canine handler for the City of East Liverpool.
Pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act and Ohio Revised Code, Green alleges he was assigned Nero as a canine partner and responsiblity for his care, which approximated to 14.5 hours per week. He also states that he routinely worked "in excess of his regular schedule," and the city never compensated him for those extra hours.
Green also states that due to the city's record keeping practices, officials didn't accurately register his time worked over in its records.
Thus, he is asking for that $65,000 in back wages, plus another $65,000 in liquidated damages and reimbursement of his legal fees to bring this action.
This is the latest court action regarding Green, who was terminated this summer after being put on several months of paid administrative leave regarding his handling of a criminal case involving the city's former safety-service director.
A 21-page internal investigation documented two dozen violations of the city's police manual that included dishonesty, discourteous treatment and gross misconduct.
There also have been several lawsuits filed against Green, some of which from Nero biting and allegedly injuring someone.
Several weeks ago, Green had pursued another hearing against a former supervisor, Chad Tatgenhorst, at the East Liverpool Police Department, seeking a civil protection order against his former captain.
Carmen E. Henderson has been assigned as the magistrate to hear this case, according to P.A.C.E.R. records. No hearing date had been set as of Thursday.
