LISBON -- The Lisbon Fire Department is considering applying for a grant to build a new fire station, pending the approval of village council.
Fire Chief Mark Hall proposed the idea of applying for the $700,000 to $800,000 grant from USDA to council during last week's meeting. Hall also requested permission to purchase the back parking lot of Jay Mullins Auto at the corner of Jefferson and East Washington Street using money from the levy.
Currently, the department relies on street parking and the parking lots of nearby businesses. He said he worries that if the Steel Trolley Diner ever opens back up, they'll lose their street parking.
Councilman Jerry Cox asked Hall why the department decided not to renovate the current station, and Hall said there is not adequate parking for responding firefighters because the current lot does not accommodate for a parking lot.
Council decided to table the matter and take time to discuss the idea before voting on it.
In other matters, Troy Rhodes, the village's liaison with Ohio Edison, updated council on several projects the company has scheduled throughout the county, such as tree trimming, pole replacement and smart meter replacement. Rhodes told council that Ohio Edison will transfer its wires from the old pole to the new pole, than notify any other companies which have wires on the pole. The smart meter replacement is occurring throughout the county, and residents have the option to opt out of it at a cost which is to pay to have someone come out to read the old meter.
In other business, council voted to accept the resignation of full-time police officer Alyssa Hilderbrand and approved the promotions of part-time officer Justin McCoy and part-time dispatcher Cara Peterson to full-time positions.
Council also approved:
-- The replacement of all 12 concrete slabs on Dickey Drive. The project would require no jackhammering since the slabs are broken and can be lifted out with the backhoe according to street supervisor Jim Oliver. He plans to do the project in sections working on Fridays, so the street is still useable by the businesses on both Dickey Drive and Lincole Place. The estimated cost for this project is $6,615.
-- The purchase of new boots for the street department, not to exceed $150 per employee.
-- The purchase of a clutch for the leaf machine from Great Lake Power Equipment at a cost not to exceed $2,250.
-- The participation of the police department in the Columbiana County Major Crimes Task Force mutual aid agreement.
-- The Lepper Library's use of the square in front of Geronimo Supply the first week of June for an interactive reading program.
-- A request from the American Legion to place 10-foot flagpoles with a PVC holder in the curb lawns of interested residents. The Legion will rent flags for five holidays to residents.
