LISBON -- The Columbiana County Health Advisory Council has chosen a new board member for the county Health District Board of Health -- Dr. Kimberly Jackson, DO.
Jackson reportedly is a family medicine specialist at River Valley Physicians in East Liverpool and a 2011 graduate of Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her appointment begins immediately, and it is expected she will be with the board of health for the upcoming meeting on Wednesday.
She replaces Dr. Jack Amato, who served on the health board for more than 40 years. At a meeting on March 1, the advisory council had voted 13-8 not to reappoint Amato for an additional five-year term.
The advisory council is comprised of township trustees, village and city governments without their own health department and a member of the county commissioners. Although the advisory council usually meets only annually, they appointed a committee to look for Amato's replacement and agreed to reconvene on Monday to make a decision.
After going into an executive session to discuss potential candidates, the advisory council returned to vote unanimously among those council members present for Jackson. The advisory council further decided to meet again at 6 p.m., Sept. 13 at the county health department.
Neither Amato nor Jackson attended the meeting on Monday. County Commissioner Tim Weigle, one of the people on the selection committee, said there were two candidates for the position. Due to the requirements of the board, Amato's position had to be filled by another physician.
Jackson was appointed to a five-year term.
