BRIGHTSIDE PROJECT

1 min read

Volunteer Tina Smith (front) carries Brightside Project backpacks Saturday afternoon to waiting recipients as one of the faith-based non-profit's founders, Scott Lewis, exits a van. The Salem-based organization was on hand in southern Columbiana County near the intersection of 20th and Independence, where the nonprofit had set up its distribution for children ages 3 to 18. Around Thanksgiving, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order awarding more than $13 million grants to 53 different non-profits around the state, and the Brightside Project was one of them. Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the Brightside Project has seen a 73 percent increase in children needing assistance. DeWine awarded them $50,000. (Photo by Stephanie Ujhelyi)
