LISBON -- So far, the slate of candidates for the May 4 primary election looks a little slim in the southern part of Columbiana County; however, voters need to not worry.
Candidates also have the option to get on the ballot as write-ins or skip the primary altogether.
According to the Columbiana County Board of Elections, candidates who have filed petitions to run for the May primary are incumbent John Mercer, of 311 W. Sixth St., and Robert Nizer Jr., of 235 Pennsylvania Ave. for council at-large (three seats) and C. Fred Rayl, 653 Bradshaw Ave.,second ward.
Scott Barrett, of 840 Grandview Avenue, has filed as an independent for East Liverpool fourth ward council; however, independent candidates won't be certified until after the May election and are placed directly on the November general election ballot.
The website notes no other partisan filings have been filed for the East Liverpool city races for council, president of council and treasurer. Those currently occupying elected officers but not on the primary ballot list include John Torma, council president; Ray Perorazio, first ward council; Jeff Kreefer, third ward council, Ernest Peachey Sr. at-large council; and Deborah Fickes, treasurer.
At-large councilman Craig Stowers already has made his intention not to run again public during Monday's council meeting.
In Wellsville, the only candidate to file for the primary election ballot is Republican Randall S. Allmon, of 439 Riverside Ave. Two seats on Wellsville council will be up for grabs, according to the Columbiana County Board of Elections.
Allmon's colleagues in Wellsville currently include Karen Dash, Michael Lombardozzi, William Taft, Martin Keith Thorn Jr. and Christi Thirtyacre.
Write-in candidates in all races on the municipal ballots still may file their intent to run by 4 p.m. Feb. 22 for the primary election or 4 p.m. Aug. 23 for the general election. Independents running on the general election ballot have until 4 p.m. May 3 to file, according to the county board of elections.
