LISBON -- Students at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center returned to in-person learning this week after being on remote learning.
Director and Assistant Superintendent Jeremy Corbisello recently told the Career Center board that the school was able to resume classes now that all of the high school teaching staff is "healthy."
Corbisello said the school has had 156 students and staff affected by COVID-19 since the start of the school year.
As of last week, there were only two students who have tested positive for the virus.
Students still have the option to continue with remote learning if they like, and Corbisello said about 19 students have chosen that route, which is fewer than the roughly 30 who were on remote learning at the beginning of the year.
The Career Center is looking into the possibility of having its staff vaccinated in middle February.
The center will continue to be a location for the county health department to administer vaccines to first-responders, dentists, eye doctors and others of a specific group, Corbisello said. The health department used the facility on Dec. 30 and 31 for the administration of vaccines to that particular population, and again on Jan. 6 and Jan. 13.
While some Career Center high school staff and nurses helped the health department administer vaccines, no vaccines were given to Career Center employees or students.
Corbisello said the health department plans to use the facility to administer the second round of shots to these same people over the next two months during specified hours.
In other business, the board of education recently appointed Charles Wellman as new board president.
Also approved was:
-- A grant in the amount of $64,997 from the Governor's Emergency Education Relief Fund.
-- The resignation of custodian Craig Chronister for the purpose of retirement, effective June 30.
-- A donation of various items from Distinctive Details, inc. of Columbiana, to the Auto Collision Repair Program.
-- Extending the paid leave entitlements of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act from Jan. 1 through March 31.
-- The tax budget, December financial statement for 2020, in the amount of $7.12 million, and the approval of December 2020 operating bills in the amount of $840,512.
-- The board also approved setting meetings for 2021 the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m., with alternate meetings dates to be the fourth Monday of each month.
