December was positively problematic for coronavirus

LISBON — More than 43 percent of the coronavirus cases in Columbiana County occurred in the month of December, according to the zip code data provided by the county health department.

These numbers exclude the cases from the FCI-Elkton federal prison, most of which occurred in the spring and are not included in the zip code data. Recent cases from the county jail have been attributed to the home address of the inmate.

Zip code numbers released over the weekend show COVID-19 increases in nearly all the cities, villages and communities throughout the county. There have been 5,196 cases from March through the end of 2020, but 2,266 of those were positive test results between Nov. 30 and Dec. 31.

Currently there have been 6,375 cases in Columbiana County, according to the Ohio Department of Health, with 405 hospitalized.
