EAST LIVERPOOL -- The St. Clair Township police department apparently just had enough of the Grinch's antics, so the green one found himself standing in court Wednesday before East Liverpool Municipal Court Judge Dominic Frank.
"Mr. Grinch, we are here today because you stole Christmas and were mean to children," Judge Frank explains to the defendant, who was accompanied by his defense attorney Joe King.
A green hermit with an unnatural hatred of all things Christmas, the Grinch has made a name for himself for more than the last six decades by plotting to ruin Christmas by sneaking out disguised as Santa Claus, so he can steal all the presents, according to his rap sheet.
King responds as the Grinch hangs his head, "He understands, your honor, and I have told him that I have represented some very bad people who have done very bad things, but this is the lowest I have went.
Judge Frank adds, "This is bad, Mr. Grinch. We have to hear from the state on this, what they want done with you."
Assistant Columbiana County prosecutor Abby Minamyer recommended community control at Santa's warehouse, as a frustrated Grinch looked on. "Santa' warehouse?" he asked.
Judge Frank inquired about the defense's recommendations. "Very rarely do I have a prosecutor recommending community control, but in this case I disagree," responded King. "I think a few days at the county jail ...," as the Grinch interrupted, "Judge, I think I need a new attorney."
King's attorney continued, (Mr. Grinch) has no remorse and no heart."
"My heart is getting bigger. I promise," the Grinch assures the judge, as his attorney promises not to tell the "kind judge" what he said about him, drawing a missed kick while the two stand at the defense table.
Instead, the Grinch tells Judge Frank, "I promise every year I will give presents to kids," resulting in a show of leniency from the judge. Frank sentences him to a 180-day suspended jail sentence and court-order community control, delivering packages to all the children on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
He also ordered the Grinch to return all the pilfered Christmas gifts and placed him on probation.
East Liverpool Municipal Court will resume operations on Monday due to the Christmas holiday.
