LISBON -- A Wellsville man was sentenced to prison for illegally dumping 26 barrels of liquid waste in Yellow Creek Township.

Timothy A. Patrick, 36 of Sixth Street, was sentenced to two years in a state prison by county Common Pleas Court Megan Bickerton after he previously pleaded guilty to illegal open dumping of solid wastes and illegal transportation or disposal of hazardous wastes.

He was also ordered to make restitution in the amount of $5,242 to the U.S. Coast Guard for cleaning up the spill and $1,000 each to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for investing the incident, with the expenses split with Christopher L. Joy.

Joy reportedly assisted Patrick in dumped numerous 55-gallon drums on Sprouse Road in July 2017. The drums were rolled over a hill and began leaking into Rocky Run Creek, which empties into Yellow Creek and, ultimately, the Ohio River. Fire officials said 26 drums were involved and they contained petroleum and natural gas-based materials.

Local, state and federal agencies were called in to help contain and clean up the spill.

For his role, Joy, 35, of Wellsville, was sentenced to up to six months at the prison alternative facility in Wintersville.
