LISBON -- A one-vehicle crash on Tuesday caused four polling locations to lose power on Election Day. Clarence E. Scott, 70, of Enon Valley, Pa., lost control of a Beatty Milk Hauling Inc. semi-truck, struck a sign, overturned and struck a utility pole on state Route 7 at 3:30 p.m.
When the utility pole was struck, power went out in nearby townships, including various polling locations while voters were submitting their ballots.
The polling locations that had their power knocked out were Lake Mount Church of Christ in Elkrun Township, East Fairfield United Methodist Church in Fairfield Township, Rock Camp, Hope Christian Fellowship in Madison Township and Rogers Village Hall in Rogers.
After the county board of elections contacted the Ohio secretary of state's office, the county EMA and FirstEnergy, it took about an hour and 40 minutes for power to be restored in three of the precincts. It took about two total hours for Lake Mount Church of Christ to get its power back because the crash occurred closest to that location.
During the power outages, voting continued due to the office's machines running on battery power in case of outages. In order to provide temporary lighting to the four facilities, local fire departments were at each scene.
"We extend our deepest gratitude to every agency that assisted our office and county voters during this incident," Bryce Miner, deputy director of the board of elections said in a press release.
Scott was cited for failure to control.
