Friends of the Library to host Sojourner Truth portrayed by Eddie Murphy

EAST LIVERPOOL-- The East Liverpool Carnegie Library with The Friends of the Carnegie Library will be presenting Sojourner Truth: A woman of passion, purpose and presence, portrayed by Eddie Murphy of Wellsville on Aug. 24 at 6 p.m.

Murphy will be bringing to life Sojourner Truth during her presentation at the Carnegie Public Library, Carnegie Public Library, 219 E. Fourth St.

Murphy, also known for her portrayal of African American Abolitionist and former enslaved woman Harriet Tubman, shares the story of Truth's life. Born in 1797 into slavery, Truth would go on to become a noteworthy abolitionist and women's rights activist

Murphy will share the story of Tubman's escape to freedom and her journey to become a key conductor on the Underground Railroad where she helped lead hundreds of enslaved people to freedom and her advocation for abolition and women's rights who would later become known for her "Ain't I a Woman?" speech she gave in Akron in 1851 at the Ohio Women's Rights Convention

Murphy is a Wellsville native who lived in southern California for nearly 40 years where she worked as director of retiree relations for Hughes Aircraft Company and then UCLA.

She returned to Wellsville 10 years ago, during which time she has been devoted to making a difference in the community. She serves as the president of the Wellsville Community Foundation.
