Assistance for flood victims
Dumpsters for flood impacted residents will be located behind New Cumberland Fire Department, available for use from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through the weekend. Cleaning supplies are available at the New Cumberland Fire Department from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the weekend. Those with basements needing pumped should call 304-564-3383 ext 200 to be placed on the list. Tetanus shots are available at the Hancock County Health Department from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, April 12.
Hancock County student scholarship
The Newview chapter of the WVU Community Educational Outreach Service is once again offering a $500 scholarship to a Hancock County senior. Application requires a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a written essay. The essay may be of any length, provided it is at least 500 words, and must be on the topic "How Volunteering Changed My Life." It is open to all Hancock County seniors, including those who have been home-schooled, who are planning to continue their education. The scholarship will be in the form of a cash award to be used at the recipient's discretion to defray the costs of continuing their education, whether at a traditional two- or four-year college, or a trade school. Applications can be obtained by calling the WVU Hancock County Extension Office in New Cumberland at 304-564-3805. They must be completed and returned to the office no later than April 30.
County engineer receives $500K
Columbiana County Engineer Bert Dawson announced recently that his office received $500,000 from the Local Roads Oil and Shale Program administered through the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The funding is for state Fiscal Year 2026 and will be used for a portion of the pavement and rehabilitation of Leetonia Road in Salem Township, which has been affected by oil and gas development.
