SALINEVILLE - Three Southern Local Elementary students got a special ride to school when they won the Highlandtown Volunteer Fire Department's Home Fire Escape Plan contest.
Kindergartener Kyla Blatch, first-grader Oliver Goddard and second-grader Liam Crawford were selected as this year's contest winners, and as a treat they were rewarded with a ride to school in a Highlandtown VFD fire truck with Fire Chief Jeremiah Cole as chauffeur. Kyla was joined by her sister, Kinzley, for the trip while Goddard had cousin Jaxon Foster aboard for his trek.
Students in kindergarten through second grade were challenged to create a plan for their home as part of the contest, which was held during Fire Prevention Week in September. SLES Guidance Counselor Larry Rudloff said the purpose of the plan was to make sure students knew exactly what to do in the event of an actual fire at their home. Fire officials evaluated the plans and one winner was later selected from each grade level. The recipient got a ride in the truck - some with a guest - and was greeted by classmates at school. Kyla took her ride Nov. 28 with Oliver Nov. 29 and Liam Dec. 1.
