SALINEVILLE -- Southern Local Elementary School has scheduled a series of classroom events as part of its Safe Student/Healthy Student program.
Guidance counselor Larry Rudloff said activities will take place Nov. 9 through Dec. 13 and will include a wide range of topics from firearm and railroad safety to character building. Rudloff will lead most of the programs while others will include in-person speakers and virtual events.
"The goal of each program is to provide our students with the knowledge and understanding that will enable them to make good decisions and choices that will promote a safe and healthy lifestyle," he said.
It all begins when Rudloff leads a discussion and video presentation on "Firearm Safety -- It's Your Call: Playing It Safe Around Guns," which will take place in the fourth-grade classes Nov. 9. That will be followed by the distribution of "Personal Pride/Indian Pride" pencils and "My Character Counts" for grades PreK-5 Nov. 10. The schedule continues with "Wise and Safe Use of Natural Gas in the Home" for kindergarteners Nov. 13; "Good Touch/Bad Touch" with Nikkie Ostick of the Christina Shelter visiting the third-grade classrooms Nov. 14; "McGruff the Crime Dog on Gun Safety" in the second-grade class Nov. 15; "The Great American Smoke Out" with a pencil distribution for grades PreK-5 Nov. 16; "School Bus Safety" with first-graders Nov. 17; and "Health Network/Help Hotline/Phone Friend" with Cathy Grizinski speaking to fourth-grade students either Nov. 30 or Dec. 1.
December's calendar will include "Bullies Are Not Welcome in Our School" with pencils distributed to all students Dec. 4; virtual programs with the Ohio Optometric Association Dec. 7 that feature "Sammy Safe Eyes" with kindergarteners, "The Adventures of Rhet and Tina" for first- and second-grade classes and "The Case of Vinny Vision" for third-graders; an American Electric Power science program with videos featuring Louie the Lightning Bug for kindergarten and Volton for fourth-graders, as well as a natural science program with Rose Berendt of Nisource Energy for fifth-graders Dec. 8; and "John's Choice: A Story about Honesty" for second-graders Dec. 12. Rudloff will round out the list with a program on railroad safety for third-grade classes Dec. 13.
