Beaver Creek September events
EAST LIVERPOOL - The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center will host the following activities in September:
-- Saturday, Sept. 9 from 1 to 3 p.m.: Live Foxes and Skunks, Oh My!! Tina Laughlin will be under the pavilion with her live pet foxes and skunks this afternoon. She will tell about the animals and guests can pet them and ask questions.
-- Saturday, Sept. 9 from 2 to 3 p.m.: "How Many Bears Can Live in this Forest?" Enjoy an activity in the yard behind the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center while exploring the importance of a suitable habitat and space for black bears in this activity. Participants will compete for essential food and then determine how many bears can live in the simulated bear territory. Suitable for ages 8 to 14 years and family members can join in as well. Registration is required by sending contact information to beavercreekw@aol.com. This activity requires a minimum of 15 to 20 people to be most effective. An alternative activity will be held if the minimum registration is not met.
-- Saturday, Sept. 16 from 1 to 4:30 p.m.: Leaf Painting. Kids and their adults can join Carolyn and other BCWEC volunteers under the pavilion and make a leaf painting. All supplies will be provided. Feel free to bring some of own leaves.
-- Sunday, Sept. 17 from noon to 4 p.m.: Fall Festival. Join the volunteers at the Wildlife Education Center as they welcome fall. The day will begin with a program on Crows and Ravens by park naturalist Evan Crawford. There will be activities for the kids including a fossil hunt with Ohio Natural Energy Institute volunteers, food and a special program by the Ohio School of Falconry at 2 p.m. Ten names will be drawn from the people attending the Falconry event and the bird will fly to their arm (Must be at least 9 years old).
-- Sunday, Sept. 17 from noon to 12:45 p.m.: Crows and Ravens. Join Beaver Creek Naturalist Evan Crawford for a presentation under the pavilion on these two prolific corvids, their unique social structures, and their important place in the ecosystem. After the presentation guests can take a tour through the Wildlife Center to see the crows in the displays.
-- Sunday, Sept. 17 from 2 to 3 p.m.: Ohio School of Falconry. During the Fall Festival, the School of Falconry will be set up in front yard of the Wildlife Education Center. Joe Dorian will demonstrate how the birds fly and capture their food and talk about each bird. At the end of the program, 10 names will be drawn from those attending the program (must be at least 9 years old to do this). Those people will be able to have one of the birds fly to their arm.
-- Saturday, Sept. 23 from noon to 1 p.m.: Winter Bees. Join local beekeeper Maria Matthews as she explains what happens to bees in the winter and how they are able to survive. She will also have some beekeeping tools and an empty hive to show. After her program, participants can look at the live bee display in the Live Animal Room and ask her questions.
-- Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.: Story Time in the Library. Join volunteer Mary Spooner for a special book reading "Every Autumn Comes the Bear" by Jim Arnosky. After the reading Spooner will help guests find the bears in the displays at the Wildlife Education Center.
-- Saturday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 4 p.m.: Geology Road Show. Join Wildlife Center volunteer and geologist Cheryl under the pavilion this afternoon at the Wildlife Education Center and learn about rocks and minerals and fossils. Learn where to find them and how to manage a collection. Participants are welcome to bring their own specimens for identification.
